About the Church

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Alėjai is a unique and striking shrine standing in the picturesque village of Alėjai, Raseiniai district. This wooden church, built in 1939, manages to combine Gothic Revival and Historicist architectural elements, giving it a distinctive and attractive appearance.

The first steps towards founding this church were taken as early as the 17th century, when in 1642 the Alėjai farmstead passed to the Dominicans of Raseiniai. A masonry chapel was built here in 1716 and was repaired in 1802. At that time services were held here three times a year — on 23 April, 21 May and 1 November.

Organisation of the parish began in 1928, when the priest Antanas Šufinskis was appointed the first filial priest. Later, in 1935, the priest Vincas Rudzinskas demolished the old chapel and began building a new wooden church and presbytery. The church was completed in 1939. A decade later, in 1949, the priest K. Rajunčius carried out repairs, covering the roof with sheet metal and repainting the interior.

Architecturally, the Church of the Holy Trinity in Alėjai has a cruciform plan with three façade towers and an additional small turret above the chancel. Inside, the church is divided into three aisles separated by columns, and the central nave is vaulted. The churchyard also contains a cemetery, which adds to the special atmosphere of the place.

Although the church is not large, it certainly inspires admiration for its subtle architecture and long history. It is a place where one can sense the spirit of the past and draw on its calm. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Alėjai is important not only to the local community but to everyone interested in Lithuania's sacred heritage.
