About the Church
The parish church of Christ the King in Aizpute stands in the Courland (Kurzeme) town of Aizpute, to the north-east of Liepāja. The history of the Catholic community here goes back many centuries, while the present church is a 21st-century building.
During the Soviet period the Catholics of Aizpute used an old wooden church dedicated to Christ the King, moved and rebuilt from Gudenieki in 1955–1956 — this was said to be almost the only Catholic church set up in Latvia during the Soviet occupation. Later it was decided to build a new church: the foundation stone was blessed in 2002, and in 2009 the completed church was consecrated, dedicated in honour of St Ignatius of Loyola.
It is a modern-style masonry church with a plastered interior and wooden fittings. The church remains the main gathering place for the Catholic community of Aizpute.
