About the Church

The church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Daunoriai, situated in the village of Daunoriai, in Utena district, is one of the distinctive examples of Lithuanian folk architecture. It is not only a house of prayer but also a place where many layers of history and culture come together.

This church's history began in 1925, when the farmer Justinas Vitkauskas generously donated a 39.3-hectare plot of land for the future house of prayer. A year later, in 1926, the first chapel was built, which in time became a gathering place for the local community. The present wooden church, as we see it today, was built in 1933–1934 and was still called a chapel until the Second World War.

An important role in the building of this church fell to Titas Vinkšnelis, the clergyman appointed rector of the filial church. Born in 1904, Vinkšnelis took care not only of the church's construction but also of the presbytery's. Unfortunately, his biography was overshadowed by exile in 1949–1956, but even then he did not lose contact with this house of prayer and its community.

Architecturally, the church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Daunoriai is distinctive for its folk-architecture forms. The building has a rectangular plan, measures 16.5 by 10.5 metres, and has a single-tower structure. Inside one can find three altars and a harmonium – a rare instrument that gives a special musical accent to church services. Such architecture and interior bear witness to the aesthetics of the period and the skill of local craftsmen.

Over many years the church has become an inseparable part of local community life, symbolising not only faith but also cultural identity. A visit to this church offers the chance to feel the authentic spirit of the Lithuanian countryside and to learn about a unique piece of the country's history.
