About the Church

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Dusetos, rising on the southern shore of Lake Sartai, is a Romanesque Revival church whose history goes back as far as the 16th century. The first wooden church in Dusetos was built before 1519, and in 1530 Jonas Radvila donated property to the parish, obliging the parish priest to maintain a school. This school became an important centre of cultural and educational life.

In the 18th century, Counts Emerencijona Pliaterienė and Jonas Liudvikas Pliateris of Dusetos manor cared for the welfare of the parish: in 1738 they built an almshouse, and in 1744 a new wooden church on a cruciform plan, with six altars and a masonry bell tower. After the uprising of 1863, local priests such as Antanas Petravičius and Domininkas Korzickis faced reprisals for their activities and their support for the insurgents.

In 1870 the Russian authorities tried to force some parishioners to convert to Orthodoxy, but the priests of Dusetos secretly continued to provide them with Catholic services. On the initiative of parish priest Juozapas Rauka, in 1872 the share of Polish-language hymns sung in the church was reduced and sermons began to be given in Lithuanian, thereby fostering national awareness.

Thanks to parish priest Antanas Rumševičius, the present brick masonry church, admired for its Romanesque Revival style, was built in 1886–1888. Inside the church there are three vaulted aisles and three brick altars, decorated with sculptures by Leonardas Gogelis. In 1930 the artist Vladas Čižauskas decorated the church, and his work later became an important part of the interior.

It is interesting that the church holds several valuable works of art, including the central altar, the pulpit, portable side altars and the painting "Mary with the Child". The organ, installed in the late 19th century, is in the Romantic style and is thought to have been made by a German master craftsman.

The churchyard is enclosed by a stone masonry wall with small chapels for the Stations of the Cross, and in one corner stands an impressive Baroque bell tower, built in 1744. On its ground floor a chapel of the Holy Cross with an altar was set up.

The history of the church was written by Canon Petras Strelčiūnas, who worked intensively in the parish before the Second World War. On his initiative, Vladas Čižauskas painted the church in 1931, and a parish hall was built in 1939.

After the Second World War, the altarist Mykolas Bergenis lived in Dusetos; he had spent many years imprisoned in the Solovki and Butyrka camps. He returned to Lithuania and was buried in the churchyard of the Dusetos church.

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Dusetos is not only a religious but also a cultural heritage site, symbolising the strength and endurance of the local community through many historical hardships.
