About the Church

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Vadokliai is a distinctive and historically rich building that has stood in the town of Vadokliai for more than a century. This wooden church was built in 1876 beside the Ramygala–Taujėnai road and is a fine example of folk architecture.

The church's origins go back to the 18th century, when it is thought a chapel was built at Vadokliai manor. The predecessor of the present church, a wooden church, was built by the manor owner Anupras Belozaras in 1781. Later, in 1876, Jonas Balvočius, serving as parish priest, considerably enlarged it, adding side chapels and the parish's farm buildings. The parish priest Balvočius was known not only for his building work but also for his initiatives in charity, education and temperance.

Despite the difficulties caused by the First World War, when the Germans took away three bells, the parish did not weaken. In 1932, through the efforts of the parish priest Juozas Remeika and the priest Petras Margevičius, an altaria (chaplaincy) was established. In later years, in 1934, the parish priest Mykolas Jusys renovated and repainted the church. Sadly, during the Second World War the church suffered great losses, but after the war it was repaired and its tower rebuilt.

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is cruciform in plan and has one main tower with two smaller turrets, and its churchyard wall is built of stone. Beside the church stands a masonry bell tower, which adds still more historical significance to this complex.

In the parish cemetery next to the church, the Chapel of All Saints can also be found, another site of important religious and cultural value.

Although times have changed, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Vadokliai has remained important to the local community, bearing witness to the spirit of the past and people's determination to preserve their religious and cultural heritage.
