About the Church

The Roman Catholic Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Landskorona (Šķaune) stands in the settlement of Šķaune, in Krāslava Municipality, on the south-eastern edge of Latgale, close to the state border of Latvia. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.

The first chapel on this site was built in 1696 by Dominican missionaries, and was replaced by a wooden church by 1769. The present masonry church was built in 1828 at the expense of the landowner Martynas Karnickis, and was renovated and enlarged in 1859.

The Baroque-form masonry church is 34 metres long and 17 metres wide; a masonry bell tower stands in the churchyard. The high altar with its stained-glass window of the Most Holy Trinity, and the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes (the first of its kind in Latgale), are state-protected cultural monuments.
