About the Church

The Church of St Lawrence in Kalnalis, in Kretinga district, is a true gem of Lithuania's religious heritage. This wooden church, built on a cruciform plan with one main tower and four smaller side turrets, has stood in the village of Kalnalis since 1883. It is not only an architectural monument but also an important site in the history of Samogitia.

Prince Andriejus Oginskis laid the foundations of the first church on this site back in 1777, replacing a dilapidated 17th-century chapel. It was here, in the church at Kalnalis, that on 1 March 1801 one of the most prominent Lithuanian clergymen was baptised – the future Bishop of Samogitia, Motiejus Kazimieras Valančius, whose work contributed to strengthening Lithuanian national identity.

Unfortunately, in the summer of 1882 the church was devastated by a fire caused by a lightning strike. But the parishioners and Fr Simonas Jucevičius did not lose hope – the church was rebuilt the very next year and continued its sacred mission. The parish of St Lawrence in Kalnalis was officially established in 1926, with the church becoming the main place of worship.

Next to the church stands a distinctive wooden bell tower in the form of a square pyramid, built in three tiers, dating from 1884. The bell tower stands out for its structure and is a fine example of the wooden architecture of its time.

The church is surrounded by a churchyard, whose wall of roughly laid stones gives the space a particular ancient charm. To the north-east, east and south of the church lie the cemeteries, where the memory of many generations of local residents rests.

The Church of St Lawrence in Kalnalis and its bell tower were entered in the register of immovable cultural heritage in 1997, in recognition of their historical and cultural significance. It is not only a sacred building but also living history, recalling events and figures important not only to the region but to the whole of Lithuania.

The Church of St Lawrence in Kalnalis is more than just a place of worship – it is a historic site that reflects the spirituality of Samogitia, the strength of the community and the memory of the nation.
