About the Church

The Skuodas Church of the Holy Trinity is one of the most striking architectural and cultural monuments of the town of Skuodas, occupying a special place in the hearts of both townspeople and visitors. Standing in the very centre of Skuodas, on the right bank of the Bartuva, this Catholic church is a site of not only religious but also historical importance.

The church's history goes back to 1572, when the Skuodas town council was granted a privilege to build a new Catholic church. Although the original church was built as early as the 16th century, the present masonry church was built in the mid-19th century, from 1844 to 1847. The building work was organised by the parish priest Tomas Sudimtas, and it was consecrated by Bishop Motiejus Valančius on 15 July 1850.

The Skuodas Church of the Holy Trinity, built in the Romanesque Revival style, has particular architectural value. The stone and brick masonry building has a rectangular plan with a semicircular apse and two towers. Its main facade, with two square towers, lends the building grandeur, while the semicircular arched windows bring a sense of lightness. The exterior finish is dominated by plastered corner rustication, pilasters and cornices, which contrast with the natural stone background.

Inside, the church likewise astonishes with its beauty. The interior is adorned by the new high altar, blessed in 2018 by the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Pedro López Quintana. In addition, side altars with paintings and sculptures of saints can be seen here, along with pews decorated with columns and carved ornamentation.

The Skuodas Church of the Holy Trinity is also distinguished by its bell tower, which houses three original bells, cast at the expense of the Lukniai village farmers Kazimieras Dirkštys, Motiejus Girdžiūnas and Juozapas Paulauskas. These bells not only perform their function but are also decorated with images and bands recalling their donors.

Also worth remembering is the churchyard, with its "brick-style" chapel by the main gate, its stone masonry wall and an oak wayside shrine pillar. Here also stands a memorial stone with a cross, erected in 1995 in memory of the first defenders of freedom from Skuodas.

The Skuodas Church of the Holy Trinity is not only a unique architectural monument, but also a living witness to history, telling of the times of many generations past and of the people who contributed to the creation and preservation of this church.
