About the Church
The Church of St John the Baptist in Juodeikiai is one of those places where history intertwines with architectural beauty and religious heritage. Situated in the village of Juodeikiai, beside the Žagarė–Šakyna road, the church has been an integral part of the local community's life since its founding in 1920.
Construction of the church was begun through the efforts of the priest Vincentas Jarulaitis, and the presbytery was built here the very next year. The church's building material is wood, which gives it a distinctive, natural charm. The building's architecture is also worth noting: the church has a rectangular plan and a single tower, a massive square tower topped with a tall pyramidal roof. The churchyard gates, made of iron and decorated with ornaments, adorn the whole setting and lend it a certain sense of grandeur.
Interestingly, the church has undergone quite a few changes over the years. In 1937 rotten logs were replaced and the tower was raised. This ensured the church's long survival. Unfortunately, in the middle of the 20th century this house of prayer was also touched by painful historical events. The parish priest Gerardas Dunda was arrested in October 1947 for supporting the partisans, a reminder once again of the hardships faced by religious communities during the Soviet period.
The church's churchyard also has a charm of its own. Here one can see the small house-museum of Father Stanislovas, standing in one corner of the churchyard. It is a symbolic remembrance of the work and spirituality of Father Stanislovas, who left a deep mark on the local community.
On visiting this church, the eye is drawn not only to its distinctive architecture but also to small details — from the cross on the spire to the small chapel in the churchyard, where thrushes have built their nest. All of this gives the church a sense of cosiness and authenticity, allowing one to feel the true spirit of this place.
