About the Church
The Roman Catholic church of the Holy Cross in Jaunjelgava stands in the city of Jaunjelgava on the Daugava, in the Aizkraukle municipality, in the Selonia region. It belongs to the Diocese of Jelgava.
At first, in 1818, a wooden chapel of St Ignatius operated in Jaunjelgava, belonging to the Skaistkalne parish; services there were held once a month by a priest from Skaistkalne. The present church of the Holy Cross was built in 1902 by the parish priest of Skaistkalne, Augustīns Luško. It became an independent parish in 1920.
It is a single-nave wooden shrine with one tower and two bells; inside stands the altar of the Holy Cross. Services are held there once a month and during the parish feast (atlaidai).
