About the Church
The Church of the Crucified Jesus in Krikštėnai is a unique wooden church, standing in the village of Vileikiai, in Ukmergė district. This church is one of the few remaining examples of vernacular Classicist architecture in Lithuania. Its history begins in the late 18th century, when Prelate Bogužas built this house of God in 1787–1790 as a filial church of the Pabaiskas parish.
The church's path was winding and complicated. At first it belonged to the Diocese of Vilnius, but in 1849 it became part of the Samogitian (Telšiai) Diocese, and from 1926 to 1939 it was assigned to the Archdiocese of Kaunas. This shows that the church held significant regional importance, even though it went through periods without a resident priest. Only in 1933 did Father Bronislovas Rūtenis, returning from exile in Russia, arrive in Krikštėnai and revive the community's spiritual life. In 1939 a parish was founded here, allowing the local community to grow even stronger.
The church's architecture is also distinctive. This single-nave church, of rectangular plan and with a small tower, has a striking facade adorned with a four-column portico — a typical feature of vernacular Classicism. This architectural detail gives the church a combination of stately elegance and simplicity characteristic only of works of this period.
It is also interesting that in the cemetery next to the church, Father Čepavičius, helped by parishioners, built a wooden chapel in 1814. Although services were held there only occasionally, this chapel became an important part of local spiritual life.
Today the Church of the Crucified Jesus in Krikštėnai is not only a place of religious rites but also valuable cultural heritage, bearing witness to Lithuania's architectural and historical treasures. It is a place where the grandeur of the past intertwines with present-day spiritual life, inviting visitors to come and feel its calm and an atmosphere steeped in historical memory.
