About the Church
The Church of St John the Baptist in Gudenieki stands in the village of Gudenieki, in the Suiti (Suiti) region south of Alsunga. It is one of three Suiti Catholic churches belonging to the Suiti cultural space included on the UNESCO heritage list.
The parish here was established in 1920, at first with a temporary wooden church. Construction of the present masonry church began in 1930 and was completed around 1948, when it was consecrated by Bishop Pēteris Strods, dedicated in honour of St John the Baptist.
It is a three-aisled, towerless brick church. For a long time it was one of the most important Catholic places of worship for the Suiti, sustaining this community's faith and distinctive culture.
