About the Church
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at Pumpėnai is a distinctive place where a rich history meets architectural beauty. The church stands in the small town of Pumpėnai, near the road linking Panevėžys and Pasvalys. Built in the late Baroque style with Classicist features, it is an important part of both religious and cultural heritage.
The church's history reaches deep into the past. It is thought that the first church was built before 1638, since one of its bells, later taken away to Russia, bore this date. By 1675 Jurgis and Povilas Zavadskis had settled Carmelites at Pumpėnai and built them a wooden church, which burned down together with the monastery in 1770. Nevertheless, the parish's traditions did not break off — in 1782 a parish school began operating here.
The present masonry church was built between 1784 and 1818. The church is notable for its impressive interior: the three-aisled nave is vaulted, and the altars were built between 1820 and 1832. In 1832 the Russian authorities closed the monastery, though the monastery building remained with the parish.
Life at the church was also intense in the 19th century. The priest Teodoras Strasevičius founded an almshouse for the elderly in 1803, and the parish priest J. Ulasevičius rebuilt the almshouse, oversaw the parish school and repaired the church between 1853 and 1859. The organ, which still adorns the church, was built in 1898 in the workshop of the well-known craftsman Martynas Masalskis in Ariogala. This instrument remains valuable for its hand-made pipes. In 2007 the organ was restored by Antanas Šauklys.
At the start of the 20th century the church at Pumpėnai became not only a place of prayer but also a centre of culture. A branch of the Lithuanian Catholic Temperance Society operated here, founded in 1912, which in 1913 opened a tearoom and a bakery.
It is also interesting that at the start of the 21st century the parish priest became a missionary priest from Argentina, Domingo Avellaneda, who through his work and dedication helped strengthen the community's spiritual life.

Its rectangular-plan hall structure with a semicircular apse and a stone masonry wall, incorporating a bell tower, draws the attention of the faithful as well as enthusiasts of history and architecture.

Spėjama, kad pirmoji bažnyčia pastatyta iki 1638 m. Iki 1675 m. Jurgis ir Povilas Zavadskiai įkurdino Pumpėnuose karmelitus ir jiems pastatė medinę bažnyčią. 1770 m. bažnyčia su vienuolynu sudegė. Dabartinė, vėlyvojo baroko su klasicizmo bruožais bažnyčia pastatyta 1784-1818 m.
