About the Church
The Holy Trinity Church at Joniškėlis is a distinctive Classicist architectural monument, standing at Joniškėlis near the banks of the Mažupė stream. Its history, beginning in the 18th century, makes the church not only a religious but also a cultural centre of the locality.
The first origin of the church goes back to 1684, when a small wooden chapel was built in the cemetery. Later, in 1752, a parish was established. The wooden church held particular importance in the town, but it burned down in 1792 after a lightning strike. Fortunately, thanks to Ignotas Karpis, then owner of the Joniškėlis manor, the present masonry church was built in 1790–1792.
This handsome church stands out for its architecture. It has a rectangular plan with a Baroque tower, and inside are three naves, separated by pillars and covered with vaults. Six altars can also be seen inside, each telling its own unique story. In addition, in 1803 the curate Stanislovas Parkovskis built a five-stop organ, which was later, in 1828, enlarged to twelve stops on the initiative of the parish priest Kibaras.
The church has deep social roots in the community. Ignotas Karpis founded a parish school in 1808, and his son Eustachas built a wooden almshouse in 1820, for whose upkeep a Charitable Society was founded. This shows how closely the church was tied to the life and welfare of local people.
During the Second World War the church was damaged, but was later repaired. One of the most notable renovations took place in 2021, when the largest bell, “Baltramiejus”, cast in 1925 in Kaunas, was returned to the church's bell tower.
Around the church there are also interesting architectural elements. The churchyard fence, made of rendered masonry and metal, adds further aesthetic value. Several distinguished people are also buried here, among them the parish priest of Joniškėlis, Bronislovas Jareckas, and the altarist Aleksandras Vytautas Masys.
