About the Church
Skrebotiškis Sacred Heart of Jesus Church is not only a house of prayer but also an important cultural and historical landmark of the village of Skrebotiškis. Located near Pasvalys, the church is a fine example of early-20th-century sacred architecture.
The church's history began even before the First World War, when it was conceived to set up a new place of prayer for the local people. In 1918 Fr Adomas Kačkus arrived in Skrebotiškis, and through his efforts an old masonry grain store was converted into a church. Thanks to the work of the priest and the parishioners, the church was officially opened in 1920.
Two years after the church was founded, the manor owner Juozapas Žagrakalys donated 15 hectares of land in the village of Kildiškiai, which was later exchanged for another plot next to the churchyard. In 1924–1925 the churchyard was walled in masonry, and in 1935 a wooden bell tower was raised in it. A few years later, in 1938, the church's interior was carefully repainted, giving it still more beauty and warmth.
Architecturally, the Skrebotiškis Sacred Heart of Jesus Church has a rectangular plan, 31.2 metres long and 11.3 metres wide. It is a single-tower church with two side turrets, whose design adds to the overall harmony of the building. Inside, the church is divided into three naves, in which there are three altars. The churchyard wall, built of stone masonry, creates a solid and secure setting for this sacred space.
