About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of St Thérèse of the Child Jesus in Aizkraukle stands on the bank of the Daugava in the town of Aizkraukle, south-east of Riga. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Riga and is dedicated to St Thérèse of the Child Jesus.
The Catholic community in Aizkraukle was re-established in 1991, shortly after Latvia regained independence. After a plot of land was acquired in 1995, construction began on a new church to a design by the architect Juris Ļetinskis, and it was blessed on 16 January 2000. It was one of the first postwar churches built in Latvia with two towers – the traditional mark of a Catholic church.
In 2003 relics of St Thérèse were brought to the church from Lisieux in France. The church became an important centre of Catholic spiritual life for Aizkraukle and the surrounding area.
