About the Church
The Church of St Bruno of Querfurt in Klaipėda is a modern, new Catholic church located in the Debrecenas microdistrict. The idea for building this church was born as early as 2007, when a new parish was established, named after St Bruno of Querfurt.
St Bruno of Querfurt is a special figure in Lithuania's history – a missionary and martyr whose life and works left a marked imprint. Giving his name to the parish was a symbolic step, encouraging the community of the faithful to unite and build stronger ties.
The site chosen for the church's construction was Draugystė Park, which became an excellent space not only for prayer but also for community gatherings. Construction work began in 2011, and the design work was carried out by the local architectural firm "Andrijauskas ir partneriai". The church and monastery complex was designed according to a project prepared by Mantė Černiūtė-Amšiejienė and Ramūnas Amšiejus, which won an open architectural competition.
The complex comprises four main parts: a chapel, a church, a monastery and a bell tower. These parts form a harmonious whole, which not only performs a spiritual function but also serves as a social centre. The religious centre is actively used for youth and schoolchildren's activities and for various community events.
On 9 December 2023 the newly built church was solemnly consecrated by Bishop Algirdas Jurevičius of Telšiai. This date became significant for the entire Catholic community of Klaipėda, as it marked the emergence of a new centre of faith in the city.
It is important to note that the construction of this church was supported not only by local believers but also by various companies, such as AB "Klaipėdos nafta". This shows how great a significance this church has, not only from a religious but also from a cultural and social point of view.
Interestingly, next to the church stands a memorial stone dedicated to the donors who contributed to the realisation of this project. Such gestures recall the strength and solidarity of the community, which helped carry out this important project.
