About the Church

The Klaipėda Church of Mary, Queen of Peace is one of the most striking and distinctive churches on the Lithuanian coast. Its history began even before the Second World War, when in 1938 fundraising for the construction of a new church was started. Under the confident direction of the engineer-architect Juozas Baltrėnas, this masonry church was built in 1957–1960 – an unusual case, since in the Soviet period the construction of churches was often forbidden or strictly restricted.

Although the church arose as a symbol of faith and community, soon after its completion, in 1961, the authorities arrested and sentenced the organisers of its construction, among them the parish priest Liudvikas Povilonis and the curate Bronislovas Burneikis. These priests served four years in prison, and the church itself was expropriated and handed over to the LSSR Philharmonic. What followed was the dramatic demolition of the church tower and the destruction of the interior, in order to adapt the building for concert use.

But the changes of 1988 brought restoration. The church was returned to the faithful, and the community, led by Monsignor Bronislovas Burneikis, undertook intensive repair works. The tower was rebuilt, a huge bell was cast in Darbėnai, and Lithuanian Franciscans from the United States donated an organ to the church, which still adorns the church today. In 1989 the artist Antanas Kmieliauskas created a new fresco, thereby completing the restoration of the church's inner beauty.

As for the architecture, the church has a rectangular plan and a single tall tower, which reaches as much as 75 metres and has an observation platform. The three-aisled space gives a sense of grandeur to everyone who steps inside. In the churchyard one can also find a stone masonry wall and, nearby, the grave of Monsignor B. Burneikis, whose contribution to this church is invaluable.

Today the Klaipėda Church of Mary, Queen of Peace not only serves as a house of prayer but also symbolises the strength of faith and the unity of the community, despite historical hardships and trials.
