About the Church
The Alytus Chapel of St Bruno of Querfurt is located in the north-western part of Alytus, on the left bank of the Nemunas, in the Putinai microdistrict, by Kalnėnų Street.
The parish was established by decree on 27 November 2009 by the Bishop of Vilkaviškis, Rimantas Norvila. As the community had no premises of its own for worship, the premises of a former kindergarten were adapted that same year – the chapel was fitted out and blessed by Bishop R. Norvila on 29 November 2009, the first Sunday of Advent. The title was given in memory of St Bruno of Querfurt – a missionary killed near the borders of Lithuania in 1009, in whose account of martyrdom the name of Lithuania was mentioned for the first time.
The parish serves the residential districts of Panemunė and Putinai. The community cherishes the hope of building a new Church of St Bruno of Querfurt, for which architectural plans have already been prepared and donations are being collected.
