About the Church
The Church of St Anne stands in the town of Lazdijai, on Vytauto Street, and is the most important church of this town on the edge of Dzūkija.
The first church in Lazdijai was built around 1560, and a parish school is already recorded in 1570. The present church, of stone and brick masonry, was built in 1894–1895 — it was constructed by the master builder Aleksandras Aleris of Suwałki, to a design prepared by the architect Feliks Lipski. In 1895, when singing in Lithuanian began, tension arose with Polish-speaking parishioners, and in 1898 the church was visited by Bishop Antanas Baranauskas.
The Neo-Baroque church has a rectangular plan, with two towers and a three-aisled interior. An organ by the famous craftsman Jonas Garalevičius once sounded in it. The historian and dean Vaclovas Strimaitis (1905–1982) is buried in the churchyard.
