About the Church
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Dieveniškės is one of those remarkable places in Lithuania where history, architecture and cultural heritage come together. Situated in the small town of Dieveniškės, the church has a rich and ancient past, reaching back to the Middle Ages.
The church is first mentioned in 1471 – almost six centuries ago! At that time Martynas Goštautas, one of the most important Lithuanian noblemen, donated to the church an inn located in the town. This was a significant event, as the church became an important centre of the community, although at the time it was only a filial church of the Geranainys parish and held no substantial landholdings.
At the end of the 18th century the Dieveniškės church suffered a disaster – fire destroyed the wooden structure. However, it was rebuilt in 1783, and with it the parish school, first mentioned in 1777, was revived as well. More than a century later, in 1861, the church was renovated again, giving it new life.
In the late 19th and early 20th century the church was further maintained and improved: in 1899–1903 the churchyard was enclosed with a masonry wall, and in 1903 a masonry bell tower with a gate was built in front of the church, housing bells nearly 200 years old. Although a 1909 project to build a masonry church was never carried out, the existing wooden structure has remained valuable and well maintained.
In the second half of the 20th century, through the efforts of parish priest Domas Valančiauskas, the church underwent several significant changes: from 1986 to 1990 rotten log walls were replaced, the interior was reconstructed and a porch was added. All this helped preserve the building and its authenticity.
Architecturally, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Dieveniškės is built in the Classicist style with features of a cross-shaped plan. It has no tower of its own, but a Gothic Revival bell tower stands above the churchyard gate. A stone masonry wall further emphasises the historic and aesthetic beauty of the site.
Services in the church are held in both Lithuanian and Polish, reflecting the cross-cultural and multicultural character of the place. Inside, valuable works of sacred art can be seen, adding to the spiritual atmosphere of the site.
