About the Church
The St Thérèse of the Child Jesus Church in Akmenynė, located just 11 kilometres north-east of Šalčininkai, is not only an architectural monument but also an important cultural and spiritual centre for the local community. Built in 1928, this small wooden church stands in the village of Akmenynė, beside the Šalčininkai–Turgeliai road.
This church's history is linked to the activity of Turgeliai parish. As early as 1830, a Uniate (Greek Catholic) church with a priest is recorded in Turgeliai, but over time the religious situation changed. The building of the church in 1928 testifies to the local community's wish to have their own house of prayer. After the Second World War, in 1945, a separate parish was officially established here.
Architecturally the church has a rectangular plan, a single tower with a smaller turret above. There are also two low sacristies. An interesting detail is the churchyard fence, built of stone masonry, which blends beautifully with the surrounding natural landscape.
One of the unique features of this church is that services are held there only in Polish. This reflects the ethnic character of the local community and its long-standing cultural heritage. The church belongs to the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Turgeliai, which also covers other nearby settlements.
