About the Church
The Church of St John the Baptist in Vertimai is one of those small but especially cosy Lithuanian shrines that breathe the history and traditions of the local community. Situated in the village of Vertimai, near the Mituva river, this small wooden church was built in 1926 to meet the spiritual needs of the growing parish.
The church's history begins after the First World War, when Tadas Kimutis, the elder of the Žindaičiai eldership, conceived the idea of building a new church. An important contribution to the church's founding is owed to the Matulevičius family, who donated 27 hectares of land for this purpose. This was an altruistic gesture that made it possible to create a new parish, covering several surrounding villages – Mikutaičiai, Žindaičiai, Velėniškiai and Dargaitėliai.
Construction work began in 1924, and Fr Jonas Padleckis took charge of establishing the parish and building the church. He was assisted by local farmers, among them Žičkus, Kimutis and Byla. Within two years the present wooden church, named after St John the Baptist, was built. The church's interior is elegant, yet distinguished by the modesty typical of the vernacular architecture style.
The church has a rectangular plan, a single tower, and a three-sided apse narrower than the nave. Inside stands an organ made by an unknown craftsman, which gives the services a special musical background.
Unfortunately, during the Second World War the parish buildings burned down, but the church itself and the shelter remained untouched by the flames. Since then the church has become an even more important symbol of the community, reflecting its endurance and spiritual strength.
Today the Church of St John the Baptist in Vertimai is not only a house of prayer but also a cultural and historical site. Services are held here once a month, and the parish is renowned for the feast of St John the Baptist held every year, drawing many people both from the local area and from surrounding districts. The feast is a time when the community comes together, shares memories and cherishes its cultural heritage.
