About the Church
The church of the Crucified Jesus in Smilgiai is one of the most interesting architectural and historical sites in the village of Smilgiai, near Biržai. This church is not only a place of worship but also a piece of cultural heritage, reflecting the architectural styles and historical events of various eras.
The very beginning of this sacred site was in 1757, when the nobleman Karolis Ciolkovičius built a chapel. It is likely that at that time this chapel was an important spiritual centre for the local community. However, over time the chapel began to fall into disrepair, and in 1862 an already-used cemetery chapel from Pabiržė was brought to Smilgiai. It was renovated and re-erected on a new site, where three altars were installed, although services were held there only occasionally.
An important date in the history of the Smilgiai church is 1915, when the priest Florijonas Juknevičius settled here. His presence and activity contributed greatly to strengthening the local community and to founding the parish. Father Juknevičius not only held services but also initiated the building of a shelter and a granary. Although he was transferred elsewhere in 1919, his influence did not fade — people asked the bishop to establish a parish, and after many years of waiting this was done on 24 October 1931.
From 1936 more serious preparatory work began for the construction of a new masonry church. This was an ambitious project that demanded a great deal of time and effort. The foundations were laid in 1939, and by 1941 the building already stood fully constructed. The final fitting-out of the church was completed in 1942, when it was consecrated by the Bishop of Panevėžys, Kazimieras Paltarokas.
The church itself is a splendid example of the Neoclassicism style. Its architecture is distinctive: a rectangular-plan, single-tower structure gives it a sense of grandeur and harmony. Inside, beautifully appointed altars and other sacred works of art can be found, admired for the precision and aesthetics of their detail.
