About the Church
The Church of the Annunciation of the Lord in Baltinava (Roman Catholic) stands in the village of Baltinava, the Balvi municipality, Latgale. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
Two wooden churches stood here previously – the first from the end of the 17th century, the second from 1769. Construction of the present masonry church began in 1909, but was interrupted by the First World War; the work was completed in 1931, and the church was consecrated that September by Bishop Jāzeps Rancāns.
It is a three-aisled, cross-plan church built of rough-hewn fieldstone, about 39 metres long; it holds about 180 people. The interior preserves valuable works of art – a 17th-century image of the Blessed Virgin Mary on leather, a 19th-century altar painting, and an 18th-century wooden crucifix.
