About the Church
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Malnava stands in Malnava, near Kārsava, in the Ludza municipality. The old wooden parish church here was built in 1741 and consecrated in 1763; in the 1930s the parish had about 9,000 members.
The foundation stone of a new, large church was blessed in 1932, but construction was halted by the 1940 occupation. Work resumed in 1995, and the church was consecrated in 2003. To a design by the architect Pāvils Pavlovs, a cross-plan building with a central dome rose in the Romanesque Revival style, modelled on Baroque churches; it is built of red and cement bricks, 48 metres long and 31 metres wide.
In 2004 a 25-stop organ made in the workshops of "Henry Dyer & Son" in Exeter, England, was installed in the church. Beside the church, an illuminated Cross of Love was erected in 1997.
