About the Church
The Church of Divine Providence at Bērzgale stands in the village of Bērzgale, in the Aglona civil parish, near Aglona, in the Latgale region. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona and is considered one of the oldest wooden churches in Latgale.
The first wooden church here, in the cemetery, already existed in the late 17th century. The present church was built in 1751 at the expense of the landowner Sokolovskis, and Bishop Juozapas Dominykas Puzina consecrated it in honour of Divine Providence, St Stephen and St Lawrence.
It is a three-aisled wooden church; on the high altar are Baroque wood carvings and two paintings of Mary, and on the side altars are images of St Stephen and St Lawrence. An authentic 18th-century altar and organ case survive, and the bell tower was built in 1848.
