About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit in Galēni (historically also known as the Vidsmuiža church) stands in the settlement of Galēni, in the Preiļi municipality, in Latgale. The church belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona and is dedicated to the Holy Spirit.
The first wooden church on this site was built in 1743; it later served as a choir rehearsal room, until it burned down in 1945. The present masonry church was built in 1910–1912 on the same site and consecrated in 1914. It is a three-aisled building of stone and brick masonry, about 26 metres long and 19 metres wide, with two brick towers.
Inside the church stand three wooden altars, the high altar being in two tiers. The Galēni church is listed among the state-protected cultural monuments and is an important centre of local Catholic spiritual life.
