About the Church

The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Archangel Michael in Sprogi is a small wooden church in the village of Dampadruva, in the Vīksna civil parish, the Balvi municipality, in north-eastern Latgale. The church belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona and is dedicated to the holy Archangel Michael.

The wooden church on a tall stone foundation was built in 1920–1921 and consecrated in 1922. The modest building, resembling a dwelling house, is about 20 metres long and 9 metres wide, roofed with slate shingles; a small bell tower rises from one side of the roof. Inside the single-nave church stand a wooden altar with a painting of St Michael, Stations of the Cross, and a harmonium.

The Sprogi church still serves the local Catholic community and is one of the modest wooden churches of Latgale that bear witness to the region's Catholic tradition, which flourished between the wars.
