About the Church

The Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Zilupe is in the town of Zilupe, near Latvia's eastern border, on the edge of Latgale. The church belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona and is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Catholic community of Zilupe was founded in 1929. In 1932 a wooden church was moved here from Raipole and rebuilt; it was consecrated on 1 July 1934 by Bishop Jāzeps Rancāns. It was a three-aisled wooden building with two 18-metre towers. In 1937 a presbytery was built.

Over time the old wooden church fell into disrepair and was dismantled in 2014. A new church was built on its site and solemnly blessed by the bishop on 21 July 2019. The new church remains an important centre of spiritual life for the Catholic community of Zilupe.
