About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of St John the Baptist in Raipole stands in the settlement of Raipole, in the Nirza civil parish, in the Ludza region, in eastern Latgale. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
Construction of the church began in 1909 and was completed in 1932; on 3 July 1934 the church was consecrated by Bishop Jāzeps Rancāns. The building was raised from red brick and dressed fieldstone.
It is a towerless church with features of Classicism, 33 metres long and 13 metres wide. It survived the ravages of the Second World War. Inside are three altars; the wooden elements of the high altar were taken from an earlier chapel of 1883, and above it hangs an image of the Mother of God hung with votive offerings.
