About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Cross in Ērgļi is a Catholic shrine in the small town of Ērgļi, in the Madona municipality, in the Vidzeme region. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Riga and is dedicated to the Holy Cross.
The Catholic community in Ērgļi was formed in 1938, but ceased to function at the start of the Soviet occupation, in 1940. The community was revived only after Latvia regained its independence. The church was adapted from a building built in the middle of the 20th century, which had earlier served as a courthouse, an ambulance station and a polyclinic.
After the building was thoroughly rebuilt in 1998 – with the interior walls removed, the ceiling raised and the roof replaced – Archbishop Jānis Pujats consecrated it as a Catholic church. Today it is a modest but important spiritual home for the Catholic community of Ērgļi.
