About the Church
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Tryškiai stands near the confluence of the Tryškis and Virvytė rivers, in Telšiai district. This wooden church is a fine example of folk Baroque architecture in Samogitia.
The first church here was built as early as the early 16th century, but by the end of the century it had been taken over by the Reformed. In December 1611, the Samogitian elder Andrius Valavičius petitioned King Sigismund Vasa to restore Catholic services and donated 91 voloks of land to the church. The present wooden church was built in 1751 through the efforts of Father Stanislovas Burneikis and was consecrated on 28 May 1755 by the suffragan bishop Mykolas Chomianskis.
The building, on a Latin-cross plan, was created in folk Baroque forms – single-towered, adorned with four small turrets, and divided inside into three naves. Five altars survive here: the high altar features an 18th-century painting of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and sculptures of the apostles Peter and Paul. Particularly valuable is the 17th-century altar of Mary, older than the church itself, with delicate carvings of vine leaves.
