About the Church
The chapel at Jadagoniai stands in Jadagoniai village, in Kaunas district, near the slope of the upper terrace of the Nemunas. This octagonal log chapel (7.5×7.5 m) is a fine example of traditional Lithuanian wooden architecture, and belongs to the parish of St Casimir at Lekėčiai.
The first chapel here was built in 1864 as a filial church of the Zapyškis parish, but it burned down in 1914, during the First World War. The idea of rebuilding the church revived in 1990 on the initiative of the Zapyškis art studio “Žemyna”, led by Virgilijus Matula.
The present chapel was built in 1994 by the craftsman Vytautas Danėnas, to a design by Gintaras Prichockas. In 2000 Bishop Juozas Žemaitis granted permission to celebrate here the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Žolinė). In the warm season Mass is celebrated in the chapel, and the old cemetery nearby attracts visitors.
