About the Church
The church of the Holy Name of Mary at Plokščiai stands on the picturesque left bank of the Nemunas valley, about 3.5 km south-east of Raudonė. The first wooden church here was built around 1670 by the landowner Jeronimas Krišpinas-Kiršenšteinas; after it burned down, at the end of the 18th century the standard-bearer of Upytė, Benediktas Karpis, built a new one on a hill.
The present wooden church was raised in 1868–1869 with funds from the church's patron Count Benediktas Tiškevičius and the parishioners, through the efforts of parish priest Patricijus Sperauskas; in 1883 it was consecrated by auxiliary bishop Juozapas Holiakas. The church has a Latin-cross plan, with one tower, a lower three-walled chancel and a wooden fence.
A particular treasure of the church is a bell cast in East Prussia in 1573, bearing a German inscription naming the maker, testifying to the exceptionally old roots of this place.
