About the Church
The Church of Our Lady, Redemptress of Captives, at Sutkai is a modest wooden church of vernacular architecture in Šakiai district, Šakiai Deanery. Its origins go back to 1825, when a chapel was raised at Sutkai that became known for its feast of St Roch. After a sacristy was added in 1834–1835, the chapel became a small church.
The parish was founded in 1918. On 10 September 1939 the foundations of a new masonry church were blessed, but construction was interrupted by the war and the Soviet occupation; work resumed only in 1999. The old wooden church — of rectangular plan, with a small tower, a side chapel, a sacristy and a three-sided apse — still stands as a state-protected cultural heritage site, although services are no longer held there. A wooden fence surrounds the churchyard, where a Lourdes grotto has also been set up.
