About the Church
The Church of St Thérèse of the Child Jesus at Sangrūda stands in the village of Sangrūda, in Kalvarija municipality, about 10 km south of Kalvarija and just a few kilometres from the border between Lithuania and Poland. The parish's founding is closely tied to the history of the state border.
The parish was founded in 1924, when the Lithuanian–Polish demarcation line divided the former Punskas district. In 1925 a wooden church was built on the manor's stone foundations, and it was blessed in 1929. On 26 March 1971 it burned down, and services were later held in a temporary chapel set up in the presbytery.
The present church, of modern masonry forms, has been built since 1995 to a design by the Vilnius architects D. Čeponis and A. Boruta, and was consecrated on 6 June 1999. In the churchyard a stone monument was erected in 1975 to mark the parish's fiftieth anniversary.
