About the Church
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Liubavas stands in the village of Liubavas, just about 2 kilometres north-east of the border between Lithuania and Poland, in Kalvarija district municipality. The history of this small parish holds both joyful and painful events.
A chapel was built here around 1717, and in 1770 the elder Juozas Kazlauskas built a church and established a parish and a school. Liubavas is also connected with the priest Juozas Montvila, who served in this parish and died in 1912 in the sinking of the steamship "Titanic". The first church burned down during the First World War, and a wooden two-towered church built in 1931 was destroyed during the Second World War.
The present church came into being in 1956, when, on the initiative of the priest Albinas Šilkinis, a wooden extension was added to the cemetery chapel – services have been held there ever since. The rectangular-plan building, with an apse and two bell towers, has three aisles inside and is built of masonry and wood.
