About the Church
The Church of St Anne at Slavikai is a wooden church in Šakiai district, Šakiai Deanery. The first wooden church here was built about 1752 by the Jurbarkas elder Mykolas Čartoriskis; at first it was a filial church of the Jurbarkas parish, and it became an independent parish in 1795. The first parish priest (1795–1827) was the Dominican Rapolas Aleknavičius, who is buried in the churchyard.
The present wooden church was built in 1835 through the efforts of the Bernardine priest Laurynas Tautkevičius; it was consecrated by Bishop Povilas Strašinskis. In the second half of the 19th century the parish priest Pranciškus Andriukaitis helped distribute the banned Lithuanian press. A tragic event took place on 13 August 1914, when German soldiers shot the curate Andrius Pesys.
The church is of rectangular plan, towerless, with two small towers; in the churchyard stands a wooden three-tier bell tower. In 2016–2019 the church was carefully renovated.
