About the Church
The Church of Our Lady, Queen of Angels, at Valakbūdis is a young wooden church with an eventful history, in Šakiai district, Šakiai Deanery. The parish was founded here in 1921, and services were at first held in a warehouse; in 1922–1923 a temporary wooden church was built through the efforts of the priest Antanas Grybinas.
The first permanent wooden single-tower church was blessed on 9 August 1936. Its design was drawn up by the building technician Borisas Lenčevskis, but the commission rejected it because of masonry forms unsuited to wooden architecture; the building was redesigned by the engineer Stasys Federavičius. This church burned down in 1944.
The present wooden church was erected in 1945. The remains of the old building's foundations have survived to this day, and a small grotto with a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been set up beside them. In 2018 the church was renovated through the efforts of Artūras Vaškevičius, parish priest of Sintautai.
