About the Church
The Ascension of Christ the King Church in Eišiškės, located in Eišiškės, is not only a place of religious practice but also an architectural monument recalling a long history. This church stands within the territory of the Diocese of Vilnius, in Šalčininkai District, and is known for its distinctive Neoclassical style.
The first church in Eišiškės was built as early as 1389. Within a few decades the building was rebuilt, but the true fate of this church was marked by dramatic events. In 1655 the Russian army ravaged the town, burning both churches that then stood there. Nevertheless, the parish community did not give up: a new parish church was rebuilt as early as 1663.
But the misfortunes did not end there. In 1706, in a fire caused by the Swedish army, the church burned down again and was rebuilt again a year later. In the mid-18th century the parish church was restored, and the town's infrastructure was augmented by a newly built presbytery and almshouse.
The present masonry church was built between 1847 and 1852 to a design by the engineer Teodor Narbutt. It was consecrated by Bishop Edward Ropp in 1905. In the 19th century, Eišiškės parish was strongly influenced by Polish culture, but Lithuanian-speaking villages still survived into the early 20th century.
Architecturally, the church is notable for its cruciform plan and towerless structure with a portico and a small turret. The interior is of basilica type, consisting of three naves separated by piers, covered with barrel vaults. In the churchyard stands a tall, 40-metre bell tower with two side gates — a rare compositional combination that gives the whole ensemble its uniqueness. The church fence is also distinctive, built of stone masonry.
Inside the church can be found numerous works of art. The most valuable among them are 18th- and 19th-century paintings, such as the portrait of Father R. Kalinovskis, "The Ascension of Christ" and "Mary". These works of art are considered monuments of national significance. A sculpture titled "Blessing" also stands in the churchyard.
