About the Church
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pabarė is a distinctive historical and architectural landmark in the village of Pabarė, located in the Diocese of Vilnius and Šalčininkai district. The church stands in an impressive location, about 12 kilometres north of Eišiškės.
The church has an interesting and rich history. The first church in Pabarė was built as early as 1920, and only five years later, in 1925, a parish was established here. However, the present masonry church that we see today was completed in 1934. On 24 October of that year this house of God was solemnly consecrated by Archbishop Romuald Jałbrzykowski. Interestingly, services in this church are held only in Polish – clear evidence of the region's cultural diversity.
Architecturally, the Pabarė church follows the traditions of the Neo-Baroque style. Its lower part is built of dressed stone, while the upper part is plastered. The church has a complex plan and lacks a traditional main tower, but boasts side turrets and chapels that lend it a distinctive aesthetic. Inside, the shrine is divided into three aisles, giving the space a sense of grandeur and solemnity. The churchyard wall, built of stone masonry, further emphasises the massiveness and solidity of this architectural ensemble.
