About the Church
The Church of St John the Baptist at Kačergiškė is a unique and interesting sacred place, which draws visitors with its history and architecture. This wooden church stands in the quiet setting of the village of Kačergiškė, about seven kilometres east of Naujasis Daugėliškis. The church belongs to the parish of St Joachim and St Anne at Naujasis Daugėliškis and to the Ignalina Deanery of the Diocese of Vilnius.
The church's history began in the middle of the 18th century. The first chapel was built in 1748 and was rebuilt in 1783. This old wooden chapel served the community for many years, but after the Second World War it was left unused. Around 1987 the chapel burned down, leaving an empty site on which a new church eventually rose.
In 1993 the present Church of St John the Baptist at Kačergiškė was built on the site of the old chapel. It is a handsome wooden building, reflecting traditional Lithuanian architecture. Although this church is quite new, it retains the spirit of the old church traditions and is important to the local community. It has a simple but cosy interior, which lends it an atmosphere of peace and reflection. A cross on the small tower and an apse further adorn the church's exterior, giving it a distinctive look.
