About the Church
The Church of St John the Baptist in Lavoriškės is a special place where history and architecture intertwine. Located in the village of Lavoriškės, near Vilnius, this church is one of the most striking examples of the Gothic Revival style in Lithuania.
The story begins as early as the 17th century, when in 1642 Ona Rudaminaitė-Pacienė built the first wooden church on the site of the present cemetery. Although this church burned down in 1655, the parish flourished in its place and was re-established in 1670 and 1750. In the 18th century, the parish school became an important source of education for the local people.
Interestingly, it was noted in 1827 that most of the parish's inhabitants spoke a Russian dialect, and few used Lithuanian. This shows the influence that various cultures and peoples had over the centuries in this area.
Construction of the present church did not begin until 1899, and took seven years, being finally completed in 1906. The masonry church, with two tall towers and two smaller turrets, represents the Historicist and Gothic Revival styles. Its interior has three naves, and the churchyard fence is built of solid stone masonry.
The church is notable not only for its architecture but also for its religious and cultural role in the region. Services here are held in Polish, reflecting the needs of the local community. Besides the main church, the parish also has other sacred spaces: the Church of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn in Kena and the Chapel of Our Lady, Protectress of Families, in Mostiškės.
In 1927 the church was consecrated by Archbishop Romuald Jałbrzykowski. This was an important event, after which the church became even more significant in the life of the local faithful.
