About the Church
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Mickūnai is an outstanding architectural monument, standing in the small town of Mickūnai, near Vilnius. It is not only a house of prayer but also a witness to history, telling of the faith of the local people and their struggle for their religious rights.
The church's origins go back to the 18th century. In 1733, Juozapas Puzinas, a canon of Vilnius Cathedral who later became Bishop of Livonia, built a chapel in this area, subordinate to the parish of Lavoriškės. The chapel gradually became an important centre of religious life for the local Catholics.
In 1826, a new masonry church rose on the site of the old chapel, designed according to the principles of early Classicism. The church has a rectangular plan and a small tower, which lends the building solemnity. A bell tower stands at the front — another architectural detail enriching the overall appearance.
Unfortunately, in the late 19th century this house of prayer ran into difficulties. In 1869, the church was closed, and two years later turned into an Orthodox church. Only in 1918, after the First World War, did the faithful of Mickūnai regain their church. A few years later, in 1922, the church was repaired, and in 1923 a parish was established, which has looked after and cared for this sacred building ever since.
During the 20th century the church was restored several times — in 1935 and again in 1969, on that occasion on the initiative of parish priest Aleksandras Liachovičius and with funds from parishioners. Such work shows the local community's devotion and love for their shrine.
Today, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Mickūnai is not only a religious centre where Mass is celebrated in both Polish and Lithuanian, but also a cultural monument preserving the history of many generations.
