About the Church
The Church of St Casimir in Pavoverė is not only a religious but also a cultural heritage site of Lithuania, whose history spans more than two centuries. This small wooden church, built in 1775 in the village of Pavoverė, is a true pearl of vernacular architecture, incorporating Classicist details.
The church was built by the Soroka family, owners of the Pavoverė manor, and six years later, in 1781, a parish school was already operating here. Over time, the church was renovated more than once. For example, in 1851 a bell tower was built, which still adorns the churchyard today with its wooden structure, along with a stone masonry wall. This church's interior is also notable for its simplicity and elegance, characteristic of the Classicist era.
One of the most notable historical details of this church is that Józef Piłsudski, the famous Marshal and head of state of Poland, was baptised here on 3 December 1867. On the organ-loft railing hangs a memorial canvas with a Polish-language inscription recalling this historic figure: "The Church of Sorokpolė. The baptismal site of Marshal Józef Piłsudski, Leader of the Nation. From the sons of this land."
Interestingly, services in this church are still held only in Polish, reflecting the strong influence of Polish culture in this region. This fact is especially significant for those interested in the historical cooperation and cultural heritage shared by Lithuania and Poland.
The bell tower beside the church and the stone masonry wall lend the whole complex authenticity and a special old-world charm. The bell tower's turret and the rectangular form of the church are a fine architectural example of an earlier period, which blends interestingly with the surrounding natural scenery.
So if you ever travel near Pabradė, be sure to visit the Church of St Casimir in Pavoverė. It will not only enrich your knowledge of Lithuanian history but also let you enjoy the peace that radiates from this unique place.
