About the Church
The Church of Divine Providence in Balingradas, located in the village of Balingradas, is one of the most interesting and important architectural monuments of the Diocese of Vilnius. Built in 1827, this masonry church still stands today on the right bank of the Neris, 12 km south of Pabradė.
This church was built by Ignas Balinskis and Elžbieta Balinskienė, the owners of Punžonys manor. At that time the place was called Bageliškės, but on the initiative of the manor owners it was renamed Balingradas. The church was at first a filial church of Karkažiškės parish, and its architecture shows a harmony of simplicity and solidity. The rectangular building, with a single tower and no apse, gives it a particular charm.
In the mid-19th century, the surroundings of Balingradas drew the interest of Count Konstantinas Tiškevičius's scientific expedition. In his writings, the count described in detail the church's interior and the collection of paintings it held. Particular attention was drawn to an old painting of St Sebastian by the Italian school and a fine copy of a depiction of the Evangelist Matthew. These works of art left an indelible impression on the count and reflect the artistic taste of the period.
In 1870 the Russian authorities closed the church, intending to demolish it and sell it as building material. The local people, however, opposed this decision, even though the then administrator of Punžonys, Maciejus Stabrovskis, ignored their wishes. Legend has it that for using the church's doors and iron crosses for his own purposes he received a harsh punishment: his labourer was struck by lightning, and Stabrovskis himself fell ill with dementia and died in agony.
After the Poles occupied the Vilnius region, the situation in Balingradas improved. In 1927, Stabrovskis's son Petras Strabovskis financed the restoration of the church at his own expense and gave it 14 hectares of land. A parish was established in 1928, and on 30 September Archbishop Romuald Jałbrzykowski consecrated the restored church.
Over its long existence the church has changed and been renovated — the most recent large-scale works took place in 2009. It is not only its architecture but also its history, having lived through various periods and trials, that makes the Church of Divine Providence in Balingradas special. It preserves not only sacred value but also the strength and resilience of the people's community.
