About the Church
The Church of St George in Buivydžiai stands in the quiet small town of Buivydžiai in Vilnius district, on the left bank of the river Neris, just a few kilometres from the border between Lithuania and Belarus.
The parish's origins go back to the 18th century: around 1790, the Marshal of Vilnius, Stanislovas Mykolas Radziševskis, built an octagonal wooden church and founded the parish. The manor and church ensemble is thought to be connected with the work of the celebrated architect Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius. The old wooden church was a valuable example of Classicism, but it burned down in 1982.
Between 1984 and 1986, through the efforts of parishioners, a similar masonry church rose on the old foundations, repeating the central octagonal plan with a dome and a columned portico. The churchyard is enclosed by a stone wall with a bell tower, and in one corner stands a small chapel consecrated in 1820 in honour of St Florian. The church is listed in the Register of Cultural Property.
