About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of St Joseph in Līvbērze is one of the oldest wooden Catholic shrines in Semigallia. It stands in the Līvbērze civil parish of Jelgava municipality, near the Līvbērze railway station.
The church was built in 1647–1665 at the expense of Vilhelmas Heinrichas fon Livenas, the owner of the Līvbērze manor. It was originally a Lutheran house of prayer, but in 1729 it was handed over to Roman Catholics and consecrated in honour of St Joseph.
The shrine is built of oak logs and has a single small tower with a bell cast as early as 1586. The parish's main feasts are St Joseph's Day, the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul, and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
