About the Church
The Roman Catholic church of the Holy Spirit in Nereta stands in the town of Nereta, in the Selonia region, near the border with Lithuania. It belongs to the Diocese of Jelgava and is one of the newest Catholic churches in this region.
Before the church was built, the Catholics of Nereta gathered for Mass in the cemetery chapel at Ķišķiai. The cornerstone of the church was blessed in 1997 by Bishop Antons Justs, and after three years of construction, to which local residents contributed generously, the shrine was consecrated in honour of the Holy Spirit in October 2000.
The red-brick masonry church was built to the design of the architect Aivaras Melderis. It became the spiritual centre of the Catholic community of Nereta.
